Laboratory Specialists
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National
Center for Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory – Fort
Collins, CO
When an existing lab needed to be replaced with a more
modern facility ViroCon made certain that while design
review and commissioning efforts took place, critical
research and life support systems operated without interruption.
The CDC is replacing an existing laboratory with a state
of the art facility at their Fort Collins, Colorado
campus. This facility will include an Insectary and
Vivarium that will be used to research diseases transmitted
from insects and small mammals.

Problem
Interrupted Research
Many times a facility can be made to work successfully,
but testing, future modifications and renovations can
cause unforeseen obstacles that impact the operation
and safety of the researchers. Stringent space conditions
required by the research being conducted require that
the mechanical, electrical and life safety systems operate
uninterrupted, even when facility testing or upgrades
are being performed. |

Solution
Experienced Design Phase Commissioning
After witnessing the expertise we provided during the commissioning
of their last three newly constructed laboratories, CDC selected ViroCon
to provide design review as a part of the commissioning effort for
this project. Our team was brought on board during the schematic design
phase and has worked closely with the design team to ensure that the
systems installed meet the owner’s requirements.
We have worked to ensure that the systems are designed so they can
be properly tested, maintained and expanded throughout the life of
the facility. Our laboratory and critical system specialists have
the experience to identify these “unforeseen” issues early
in the design process. Issues are being identified and corrected to
allow future modification/expansion of the facility with little or
no impact to the research conducted at the facility. |
