Case Study - Sprint PCS - Building Systems Commissioning - Virocon
Owner's Field Team

World Headquarters Campus Construction – Sprint, Overland Park, KS
When Sprint consolidated their Kansas City office space to a newly constructed 4 million square foot campus, ViroCon worked directly with the owner to provide expert commissioning services, eliminating future calls to the contractor and ensuring the facility worked as planned.

Sprint consolidated most of their Kansas City office space and relocated their world headquarters to a newly constructed 4 million square foot campus. The campus consists of 22 buildings, including a 12,000 ton central plant. For this project as with all of their other new construction projects, Sprint contracted the TAB and commissioning of this project directly with the selected firms.

  Problem
Installed Systems Not Performing as Specified

Test results indicated improper airflow from thousands of installed Fan Powered VAV boxes. The owner believed that installed boxes would be remotely adjustable through the building automation control system to allow airflow changes as required by future modifications to the floor plan usage. Installed systems did not perform as specified by the design.

  Solution
Commissioning For The Owner

Sprint selected ViroCon in part due to an experienced and skilled field staff that can quickly identify technical problems encountered during construction. Our field engineers were able to measure the inputs and outputs of the various controllers to assist the manufacturer in identifying the cause of the issue. Our team proved that the systems installed did not operate per the specifications and insisted corrective measures be taken.

Working directly for the owner combined with our ability to understand the owner’s needs, designer’s intent, and the installed control systems and equipment, allowed us to protect and defend the owner’s interests throughout this project. Our ability to accurately troubleshoot systems and identify corrective actions promotes de-bugging of “installed” problems and eliminating future contractor call backs. Identifying the issues prior to occupancy provides the owner what they desire, getting what they paid for the first time - a facility that works.
